Kangen Water: What do alkaline, antioxidant, and ORP really mean?

Water is an integral part of our daily lives. We turn on the tap, fill a glass, and drink. But water isn't just about taste or purity. Its pH value, redox potential (ORP), and dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂) are also interesting properties. This is precisely where Kangen Water comes in.

Kangen water is produced using a water ionizer. At The Living Water, we focus particularly on Enagic devices, which first filter tap water and then purify it through electrolysis . This process creates different types of water for various applications. ( The Living Water )

But what does it actually mean when Kangen water is described as alkaline or antioxidant ? And what does the frequently mentioned ORP value have to do with it?

What does "alkaline water" mean?

Put simply, the pH value describes how acidic or alkaline an aqueous solution is.

A pH value of 7 is considered neutral. Values below 7 are acidic, values above 7 are basic or alkaline.

During electrolysis in a Kangen water ionizer, an alkaline and an acidic water stream are produced. Different pH levels are offered for drinking water, ranging from 8.5 to 9.5 . ( The Living Water ) Thus, Kangen water differs from ordinary tap water not only in its prior filtration but also in its electrochemical properties.

Does alkaline water automatically make the body "alkaline"?

An important distinction needs to be made here. The human body, for example, regulates the pH value of the blood very strictly. The idea that one can simply make the entire body "alkaline" by drinking alkaline water is therefore a gross oversimplification.

When we at The Living Water talk about alkaline Kangen water , we are initially referring to a measurable property of the water itself: its pH value .

This is a much more precise statement than the promise that alkaline water can eliminate "over-acidification of the body" across the board.

What does antioxidant mean?

To understand this concept, we need to briefly look at oxidation and reduction .

Oxidation is a completely natural chemical process. The classic example is iron, which rusts. Oxidation and reduction reactions also occur constantly in our bodies. So-called reactive oxygen species and free radicals play a role in these processes. Antioxidants can participate in redox reactions and counteract oxidative processes.

And this is precisely where the ORP value becomes interesting for Kangen water.

ORP – what does this value mean?

ORP stands for:

Oxidation Reduction Potential , or ORP, is typically expressed in millivolts (mV) . In simplified terms, the measurement can be visualized as follows:

Positive ORP → more oxidizing environment

Negative ORP → more reducing environment

An ORP meter measures an electrical potential difference relative to a reference electrode. This is important to note: ORP is primarily a physicochemical measurement of the water – not a direct measurement of its health effects on the human body.

Why does Kangen water have a negative ORP?

This is where electrolysis comes into play. During electrochemical treatment, not only does the pH value of the water change, but molecular hydrogen (H₂) is also produced on the cathode side. This dissolved hydrogen contributes significantly to the reducing properties of electrolyzed water and thus to its negative redox potential.

Kangen water can have a negative redox potential due to electrolysis. The actual ORP value depends, among other things, on the source water and the selected settings.

A simple example: apples and oxidation

Cut an apple in half and leave it to sit. After some time, the surface will turn brown. This is due to oxidation processes.

The difference between oxidizing and reducing conditions can therefore be visualized as two different chemical environments. The ORP value can describe precisely such differences. However, it's important to note that a negative ORP value in the glass does not automatically mean that all oxidation processes in the human body are prevented.

Molecular hydrogen H₂ – the interesting part

From our point of view, therefore, not only the pH value is of interest.

During electrolysis, molecular hydrogen (H₂) is produced, which can be dissolved in water. The Living Water therefore describes molecular hydrogen as one of the characteristic features of Kangen Water. ( The Living Water )

This also explains an important connection:

Electrolysis → formation of H₂ → altered redox properties → negative ORP

pH and ORP do not describe the same thing . Water can have a high pH value without automatically having the same redox properties or the same dissolved hydrogen content.

ORP and pH: two values, two statements

The two values can be remembered in a simplified way as follows:

Measurement

What is being described?

PH value

How acidic or alkaline is the water?

ORP value

How oxidizing or reducing is the environment?

H₂

How much molecular hydrogen is dissolved in the water?

Therefore, it is not sufficient to assess water solely based on its pH value.

In electrolyzed Kangen water, the interplay of filtration, electrolysis, pH value and molecular hydrogen is particularly interesting.

Why does the ORP value change?

The ORP is not a fixed product property. Its values can be influenced by factors such as the composition of the source water, minerals, temperature, pH value, device settings, and dissolved substances. The water can also change after production.

Therefore, a concrete measurement is more meaningful than a general ORP value in an advertising brochure. This also corresponds to the information on The Living Water: It is already pointed out there that the actual ORP value depends on the original water supply. ( The Living Water )

So what makes Kangen water special?

Kangen water cannot be better explained with a single buzzword.

It is the result of several steps:

tap water

↓ Filtration

↓ Electrolysis

↓ alkaline drinking water

↓ dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂)

↓ altered redox potential / negative ORP

This combination is precisely what distinguishes electrolyzed water from water whose pH value has only been increased by added minerals, for example.

Conclusion: Don't just focus on "alkaline" products.

When Kangen water is discussed, the focus is often on its alkaline pH value. However, this is too simplistic. The processes during electrolysis , the resulting molecular hydrogen (H₂) , and the consequent redox potential are at least as interesting.

The ORP value helps us understand whether oxidizing or reducing conditions are predominant in the water. A negative ORP is a characteristic of freshly produced electrolyzed Kangen water – however, it should be understood as a measurement of the water's properties and not as a medical claim . That's precisely why at The Living Water , we don't just want to say that Kangen water is different. We want to explain what actually happens in the water. Healthy water, healthy living.
